The Importance of Regular Cleaning

Over time, dirt, debris, and spills can accumulate on your stone floors, dulling their natural shine and beauty. Regular cleaning is vital to prevent the buildup of grime, which can scratch the surface and cause irreversible damage. Sweeping or vacuuming daily is a good start, but occasional deep cleaning is necessary to keep your floors in top condition.

Beware of Harsh Chemicals

When cleaning stone floors, it’s essential to avoid using off the shelf detergents, harsh chemicals or acidic substances. These can erode the stone’s surface and cause permanent discoloration. Instead, opt for pH-neutral, stone-specific cleaners, and always perform a spot test in an inconspicuous area before applying any new product. PMAC sell such a pH- neutral stone cleaner through our contact page.

Grout Care

The grout lines between your stone tiles are just as important as the stone itself. Over time, grout can become discolored and grimy. Regular cleaning and occasional resealing of the grout will protect it from moisture and stains, keeping it looking fresh and preventing the growth of mold and mildew.

Our top seven tips for keeping your natural stone tiles looking like new!
  1. For effective cleaning and maintenance of any natural stone, it is important to note the nature and composition of your stone. It is also important to find out whether your stone has been pre-sealed at the quarry or requires sealing at installation.
  2. Pre-clean your stone surface with a suitable pre-cleaning product if deemed necessary. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a white cloth to clean the stones with the diluted solution. If marks persist, you can use a white emulsifying pad to aid removal.
  3. Rinse and dry thoroughly before sealing. Drying time will vary according to nature of your stone. Travertine and quarry tiles, for example, are very porous and generally need to be left over night to dry.
  4. If you need to remove grout, use an alkali solution.
  5. Once dry, seal with a suitable sealer (water and oil repellent).
  6. Note that there are also products available that can enhance the colour or give you a high gloss/wet look.
  7. For regular maintenance, we recommend you use a pH neutral cleaner such as Stone Soap.
