Maintaining Your Polished Concrete Floor
We’ve previously discussed how to choose the right contractor for your polished concrete floor , explored the various finishes available, and outlined what to expect once your polished concrete floor has been installed . Now, let’s focus on how to maintain your stunning new floor.
Polished concrete floors are among the easiest and most cost-effective options in terms of upkeep. Unlike stone, vinyl, or wooden floors, they don’t need regular waxing or polishing. These floors are designed to handle heavy traffic and are highly resistant to scratches. However, while they require minimal care, some maintenance is necessary to preserve their lustre and vibrant colour. Here are a few essential tips to keep your polished concrete floor gleaming, maintain its shine, and extend its lifespan.
Mop Regularly
First, dust mop your polished concrete floor daily, especially in high-traffic areas. Use a microfibre cloth or pad to trap dust and prevent abrasives from dulling the surface. For a deeper clean, wet mop residential floors as needed. Always use clean water and a fresh mop, changing the water frequently to avoid redistributing dirt. To prevent streaks, dry the floor with a clean white cloth as you go.
Soap
Additionally clean the floor in sections to manage the area more effectively and ensure soap doesn’t dry on the surface. Frequent rinsing is essential because pH-neutral soap suspends dirt. We recommend using hot, soapy water with a pH-neutral cleaner, such as our Stone Soap. Avoid harsh acidic cleaners like bleach, citrus, or vinegar, as these can damage the surface by etching and dulling the finish.
Manage Detergent Build-Up
Over time, detergent can accumulate on your floor, leaving it looking dull. To remove this build-up, simply mop with boiling hot water (without soap) or scrub with a soft-bristle brush and hot water as necessary.
Clean Up Spills Promptly
Polished concrete floors feature closed pores that help prevent spills from penetrating. However, it’s crucial to wipe up spills immediately. Acting quickly reduces the chance of stains, especially when dealing with acidic substances like wine or citrus
Apply a Seal
To add an extra layer of protection, consider applying an impregnating seal to your floor. This will provide a buffer to clean up spills before they seep into the surface, while also enhancing the floor’s shine and repelling acids. Keep in mind, seals need reapplying every few years, particularly in high-traffic areas where wear can cause dull patches.
