Preserving a Piece of Dublin’s Heritage

PMAC recently completed specialist cleaning works on O’Connell Bridge for Dublin City Council. The historic bridge crosses the River Liffey and connects the north and south sides of Dublin’s city centre. Over time, heavy traffic and harsh weather caused a build-up of carbon, grime, algae, and graffiti on the stone surfaces. As a result, the bridge required careful cleaning to restore its appearance and protect the historic stone.

Careful Planning to Reduce Disruption

Because O’Connell Bridge is one of Dublin’s busiest crossings, PMAC planned the work carefully. First, the team secured the area and safely cordoned off the MEWP using clear signage and safety lighting. This approach helped protect pedestrians and traffic while work took place.

Next, the team scheduled the cleaning works between 9pm and 4am. Therefore, disruption to the public remained minimal. The crew cleaned the southern side first and completed the front and back sections over two nights. Afterwards, the team cleaned the northern wall during the following two evenings.

Low Pressure Steam Cleaning for Heritage Stone

Our trained specialists used low-pressure, high-temperature steam cleaning. This method removes pollutants, algae, and dirt effectively while protecting delicate historic stone. In addition, the technique avoids harsh chemicals and reduces the risk of surface damage.

As the cleaning progressed, the original stone colour gradually reappeared. Consequently, the bridge’s appearance improved significantly and enhanced the surrounding cityscape.

Why Maintaining O’Connell Bridge matters

O’Connell Bridge is more than a transport route; it is an important part of Dublin’s heritage. Originally built in 1794, the bridge remains one of the city’s best-known landmarks. Interestingly, it is slightly wider than it is long, which makes it unusual among European bridges.

Regular maintenance protects the structure from long-term damage caused by pollution and biological growth. At the same time, it helps preserve the character of Dublin’s historic streets.
